The quarterly data reveals a total of 25,511 tonnes of portable batteries have so far been placed on the UK market this year, 14,738 of which have been collected and sent for treatment to Approved Battery Treatment Operators (ABTOs) or Exporters (ABEs).
This means the UK collection rate for portable battery types sits at 37.3%, indicating good progress towards the annual 45% target. Given the indicative total UK obligation for 2023 is 17,797 tonnes, battery compliance schemes need to collect roughly an additional 3000 tonnes in the last quarter of this year.
The tonnage of collected batteries is calculated by the amount of recycling evidence notes procured by compliance schemes from ABTOs and ABEs.
Whilst it is unlikely the consultation on reforming the battery producer responsibility system is published by the end of the year, we expect in 2024 it will be released and cover key issues such as increasing portable waste battery collections, and reforms for industrial and automotive battery types.
