On 7 May Defra released the second consultation for introducing consistent recycling collections in England. The deadline to respond is 4 July 2021. It followed on from the second round of consultations on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging and Introducing a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, that were launched on 24 March 2021.
This consultation builds on proposals first consulted on in 2019 to introduce standardised collections of recyclable materials from both households and businesses by 2023.
It is hoped that the new measures being consulted on will ultimately help to improve stagnated kerbside recycling rates by improving consistency between local authority collection services.
Encourage and support packaging producers to respond
At 108 pages long, the official consultation support document for the consultation is necessarily in-depth and technical. In an effort to encourage and support as many packaging producers as possible to respond, Ecosurety have released an easily digestible highlight summary that covers the pertinent points that all producers should consider feeding back on. The highlight summary includes reference links to the original government consultation document.
